Further Evidence of 1888 History Re-write: 1966 - A. V. Olson

1966 . . .

Concern in the field caused more books to come from our denominational press to rewrite this history. A. V. Olson’s 1966 publication about the Minneapolis era was given a mysterious title contradictory to history. His work was entitled, Through Crisis to Victory 1888-1901. But not once does Ellen White refer to 1888 as a “victory.” She calls it defeat—”Satan succeeded in shutting away from our people, in a great measure, the special power of the Holy Spirit” (1888 Materials, p. 1575).

To support his “victory” theory the author goes on to say: “We have found many heartening indications of acceptance. In all this voluminous material we have found only three references to any active opposition to the blessed truth of righteousness by faith” (p. 229). But there are hundreds of negative reactions to the message and the messengers and the open rebellion that existed. Ellen White’s testimony is clear: “My testimony was ignored, and never in my life experience was I treated as at that conference. … I became the subject of remarks and criticism. … My labors seemed to be in vain” (1888 Materials, pp. 187, 218, 223).
